504 and IDEA

Parents and educators need to know that children with disabilities can be protected under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) or 504. These services can be available to your child at a private or public school. There are different criteria for eligibility, different services available, different accountability, and different procedural safeguards. for 504 and IDEA.

I recommend this great article to learn more about the differences http://www.parenttoparentofga.org/roadmap/advocacy/educationlaws504&ideachadd.htm
Here you will find an easy to read link to a simple table that compares 504 and IDEA

Parents it is always best to research your child's areas of concern. If ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is the concern research common strategies for ADHD in the general classroom and at home. You should know what the best practices are for the area of concern your child demonstrates. If the concern is speech find out what type of speech exercises, games, and activities can be done to at home and in school to improve your child's specific speech/language challenge(s). Learn about the average amounts of speech services offered by districts. Once you educate yourself about the "disability" you will be empowered to identify appropriate accommodations and modifications that your child may be entitled to receiving.

Where can you go for strategies? Check with your local libraries. College/University and city libraries are great resources for special education topics. You may also go online to the

Stay informed!
