Books & Brownies

Looking for a great way to keep your kids interested in reading?

Try these simple tips. Make reading fun!
1. Allow children to visit various libraries regularly. Let them choose their own books.
2. Use their interest to choose books for them.
3. Purchase or borrow books on tape/CD.
4. Create your own books on tape/CD. Simply record your voice as you or the child reads along with their favorite books.
5. Pop popcorn or prepare the child's favorite healthy snacks (fresh berries w/whipped cream, chips & salsa, cookies & milk) and snuggle (sit close) while you read.
6. Avoid being punitive! If the child misreads simply say what they should have said and move on.
7. Go to kinkos and help your child create (with professional binding) their own books.
8. Check out books written by other kids and show the kids the child's information.
9. Connect reading with a field trip. Before you take an interesting trip, reading about it, then after the trip read more.
10. Encourage your kids to write, then read what they write.

Tonight, our family is making brownies. For each book we read, we eat a brownie. Now what child wouldn't want to read while eating brownies?

Have fun reading and stay informed.
