Getting ready for summer

Last year I posted some information on reading in the summer. You can go to the Blog Archive and choose June or July to view them.

Yesterday I took the kids to the library to complete homework. Not only was it quiet and effective, but my son requested his own library card. As he completed his application I helped him to make a real world connection by telling him how the things he had learned at home & school was helping him to complete this application. "Remember in Kinder you learned your address?" "Remember in first grade you learned to read and continue to practice comprehension?"

The things he is learning at home and school are things that are relevant to his life. Helping kids see this connection is important. So the next time they are completing algorithms, create a program, or practicing writing help them to see why those skills are important in the real world. Likewise, when you catch them sharing, taking turns, and being kind share with them that collaboration and team work are the NEW must have skills.
